One treasure...two gifts!
August 2018 - Bill Daugherty (left) presents an historic cane to Chebeague Island Historical Society president Toby Webb. The cane, decorated with a whale tooth encased in engraved sterling, will become a part of the Historical Society's collection. Although the exact history of the artifact is not certain, most likely it was brought back to the island by one of Chebeague's 19th-century ship captains. The cane was donated to Island Commons which then auctioned it with the understanding that the successful bidder would donate it to the Historical Society. Daugherty, a Chebeague summer resident, was the winning bidder and the cane will remain on Chebeague as part of the island's rich maritime history.
Thank you to the RECOMPENSE FUND for awarding Island Commons $8,000, targeted toward our continued financial sustainability....
As a MaineCare provider, Island Commons is faced with navigating a highly regulated system with complex rules for reimbursement...which invariably fall short of the actual cost of providing residential care. Professional services of a RCC Business Services, CPA-led firm who specialize in this area, has helped us to maximize our reimbursement rate and reduce the funding gap inherent in the MaineCare system, saving Island Commons tens of thousands of dollars. We thank members of the Recompense Fund for their grant, which will help to cover the cost of this important financial service...and provide a return in value many times over!
